An alternative method of installing a suitable engineering screw rather a wood screw into the stock of a rifle with a wood or laminate is to install a Stud Insert.
This enables the Classic Rifle Adapter to be directly attached to the rifle stock in the normal way.
The main advantage of adopting this installation is that metal screw is mated with a metal threaded fitting, rather than the softer wood or laminate, preventing long term damage and wear.
This is a much stronger type of fitting which is more suitable for dealing with the kinetic forces generated when shooting off of a bipod.
The Stud Insert is a good option where no sling swivel exists but is also a simple fix for rifles where the original sling stud has become loose or pulled out of the stock. In these cases, a suitable threaded sling stud should be sourced to match the insert.
The insert is a small metal piece that can be bonded into the stock of the rifle. The outside is machined to aid the bonding process into the rifle stock.
An 8mm hole is drilled either into the existing sling stud hole or in addition to the sling stud hole if a second stud is required for a sling or Classic Rifle Adapter & Picatinny Rail.
It is important to ensure that there is sufficient headspace between the bottom of the hole to be drilled to accept the insert and the bottom of the barrel.
The insert is simply bonded in place using a good quality two-part epoxy resin that has good resistance to moisture & heat.
The Adapter is then attached to this in the usual way.
