This article will provide an overview of the fittings & options, to see which adapter fitting will best meet your needs.
Firstly we should reiterate that genuine Blaser branded carbon bipods & stock fittings (produced by us & sold by Blaser) are all designed to fit with 12.5mm socket size. This is incompatible with Spartan's 12mm socket size for all other products and adapters.
This is specific to Blaser rifles only.
All of our Spartan fittings are 12mm, so not directly interchangeable. This often comes up with Blaser owners, and causes confusion for all!
We do supply a 'Blaser Classic Gunsmith Adapter' in the 12.5mm size for Blaser rifle owners that wish to use their Blaser bipods on other makes of rifle that they own. We are also able to offer a 12.5mm ball joint fitting for our Davros head & Sentinel tripod systems.
For rifles without the genuine Blaser fittings, (who wish to use The Blaser R8 Pro Success currently has three good options that are available to enable the Javelin bipod product range.
1. Blaser Classic Rifle Adapter
This adapter is designed with our 12mm 'Universal' fitting machined into it. This simply attaches to the front end of the stock using the existing sling swivel mounting point and requires no alteration to the rifle stock. There is a position to remount the sling at the rear of the adapter.
2. Universal Adapter
This is fitted to the fore-stock of the rifle behind your existing swivel attachment point. This would be similar to fitting a conventional sling swivel stud to your forestock.
This method of attachment that minimises any alteration to the rifle, and makes use of the existing screw holes in the stock.
A slightly larger and longer 6mm screw, washer & half nut are required to hold the adapter to the stock & clear the underside of the barrel. This will require the adapter hole to be drilled out from 5mm to 6mm.
Also, the outside rim of the 6mm screw head might require grinding down a fraction to ensure that is correctly countersunk. (The bipod also requires this to function correctly.)
A 5mm screw may also be used to achieve this, but the Blaser threaded inserts are 6mm, so the adapter will in effect be bolted through (See the photos below.)
A hole is drilled through the fore-end that lines up with its forward mounting hole of the stock. This will now to allow a screw to hold the ‘Universal Rifle Adapter’ to the fore-end.
3. Classic Gunsmith Adapter
These are the small barrel-shaped adapters that are fitted into the stock of the rifle. The process is fairly straight forward on the R8 Pro Success, but careful measuring is required as space into which the adapter is fitted is limited. (See photo below)
The Adapter should not be fitted too far back in the available space as the main rifle stock has a lip that needs to slide over the smaller fore stock section. (See photo.)
The hollow synthetic stock rifles require the adapter to be bedded in. Our experience is that many customers come back to this fitting once they have become familiar with the concept of the quick detachable bipod.
If you intend to use the existing sling swivel fitting, then you will either need to ensure that this in place prior to bonding the 'Classic Gunsmith Adapter' in place or carefully work the epoxy used for bedding the adapter around the rear of the fitting.
An 18mm hole is drilled into the fore-stock, and then slightly enlarged to create an interference fit between the forestock & the adapter.
The adapter needs to be embedded using a body of good quality of 2 part epoxy resin to provide strength & support to the fitting when loaded.
We have been using 'Devcon 10110 Type-A Putty' for this purpose and find it excellent. It can be installed in a way that leaves a very low profile on the rifle stock until the bipod is fitted.
The 'Classic Gunsmith Adapter' is also suitable for installation into wood stocks.
Attached is a video showing the initial installation of the adapter into a wooden rifle stock, which will give you a better idea of the process involved:
